As with most elective cosmetic procedures, there are several basic criteria that determine if you’re a good candidate for a breast reduction procedure. They include:
- Your breasts are too large in proportion to your body
- Your breasts are heavy and the nipple points downward
- One breast is much larger than the other one
- You have back, neck and shoulder pain from the weight of your breasts
- You enjoy relatively good health without any medical conditions that could jeopardize your healing or present surgical risks
• You’re a non-smoker (smoking can impair the healing process), and you have realistic expectations on what the surgery can do for you
After your surgery you will be able to see the results almost immediately, but you will experience swelling and bruising. This can be helped with a cold compress, placing it on for 20 minutes, then leaving it off for 40 minutes. Your pain will be managed by the medication prescribed for you by Dr. Jimerson.Complete recovery can take several weeks to several months, but most patients return to work in about one week. You will need to wear a surgical support bra for 4-6 weeks after your procedure. Total healing can take up to six months. During that time you will need to avoid bending over or lifting anything over 5 pounds. You will be able to get back to your exercise regime in 4-6 weeks.
Your smaller breasts will help you feel more comfortable, eliminating the back and neck pain and skin irritation common with excessively large breasts. The procedure will also help you with posture problems. Most patients are able to participate in sports activities that they were kept from due to their large breasts. Most importantly, you will begin to feel more confident without the embarrassment of breasts that are out of proportion to the rest of their body. You will no longer feel self-conscious wearing bathing suits or other forms of revealing clothing.
You will discuss various anesthesia options with Dr. Jimerson, including sedation and general anesthesia. He will determine the best type of anesthesia based on the procedure, your health history and his preferences.
For the procedure, an incision is made in each breast, so that all excess skin, fat and tissue can be removed. Depending on your particular situation, liposuction may be used to remove additional fatty deposits.
If your breasts are extremely large and the nipple is pointing downward, it may be repositioned to give you the most pleasing appearance. Finally, the incisions are sutured together. A compression garment or surgical support bra will be placed to reduce swelling and help maintain your new shape.
As with any surgical procedure, there are some potential risks or complications. You have to determine if the benefits that you’ll obtain from your procedure outweigh the risks involved.Dr. Jimerson and his trained staff will do everything possible to minimize risks and postoperative complications. Risks of the procedure may include:
- Anesthesia • Bleeding • Infection • Bruising • Scar irregularities • Blood clots • Breast asymmetry
