Dermal Fillers: Hyaluronic Acid

What are hyaluronic acid injections?

There are many types of dermal fillers, which are used to reduce facial wrinkles and lines. The main advantage of hyaluronic acid is that is highly compatible with the human body. Itā€™s a substance that is found in almost all living things. In the human body, itā€™s responsible for transferring essential nutrients from the bloodstream to the skin cells.

The highest concentration is found in soft connective tissues. Itā€™s also found in the fluid surrounding the eyes, cartilage and joint fluids, and skin tissue as well. Once itā€™s extracted and reformulated, it is used as an injectable filler ā€“ and itā€™s one of the most popular ones on the market.

Another use is for arthritis ā€“ itā€™s injected into joints to provide cushioning and reduce pain. There are many brand names for hyaluronic acid, but some of the most popular ones are Juvederm, Captique, Elevess, Estheils and Restylane.

As a filler, it works by supporting facial structures and tissues that have lost their elasticity or volume due to aging. Hyaluronic acid also has the ability to draw water to the skinā€™s surface, keeping it looking fresh and rejuvenated.

Cost for hyaluronic acid injections
Costs can vary based on individual patient needs and the amount of injections required.

The costs involved in this procedure include facility fees, medical tests, cost of the hyaluronic acid, Dr. Jimersonā€™s fee and any medication or any additional treatment that may be required. Our staff will provide you with a detailed cost estimate for your procedure.

Are you a candidate for hyaluronic acid injections?

As with most elective cosmetic procedures, there are several basic criteria that determine if youā€™re a good candidate for male cosmetic surgery. They include:

  • You enjoy relatively good health without any medical conditions that could jeopardize your healing or present surgical risks
  • Youā€™re a non-smoker (smoking can impair the healing process), and you have realistic expectations on what the injections can do for you

Be aware that one treatment may not produce the results you are hoping for. Most patients require three visits before they are happy with the results. The other thing to remember is that the injections are not permanent; they will last between three and five months, depending on your body chemistry and the rate at which you are aging.

Risks involved in hyaluronic acid injections

As with any procedure, there are some potential risks or complications. You have to determine if the benefits that youā€™ll obtain from your procedure outweigh the risks involved.

Dr. Jimerson and his trained staff will do everything possible to minimize risks and postoperative complications. Risks may include:

Redness ā€¢ Swelling ā€¢ Bruising ā€¢ An allergic reaction ā€¢ Red and/or thickened nodules at the injection sites (temporary)

Itā€™s important to discuss any concerns you have with Dr. Jimerson prior to your surgery. If you have a question ā€“ please ask!

Injections
Dr. Jimerson will evaluate your appearance and devise a strategy for the injection sites. The area is cleaned with an antibacterial agent, and a topical anesthetic is placed on the injection sites. In some cases, the anesthetic is already included in the hyaluronic acid.

Injections are made, which only take several seconds per site. The face is cleaned and ice packs are provided to relieve any discomfort you may have. At times, deeper injections may be needed, and you will be given a local anesthetic to alleviate the pain.

Results
These injections often referred to as a ā€œliquid facelift,ā€ produce dramatic results, improving the skinā€™s contour and reducing depressions in the skin resulting from scars, injury or lines.

These include acne scars, cheek depressions, and crowā€™s feet, deep smile lines, frown and marionette lines, worry lines and some facial scars. Some scars can be treated, including acne, burn and scars caused by wounds.

In order to maintain the renewed and youthful appearance resulting form the injections, you will need to have them repeated two to three times per year.
